Mental Health America’s First Signature Event Launches in 2008

Jammin’ Away the Blues, Mental Health America’s brand new signature event, is a one-day festival featuring the best in Blues entertainment. The community-wide concerts are an opportunity for affiliates to raise awareness of the importance of mental health, as well as raise funds for mental health advocacy, public education and research.

This fall, San Diego and Kansas City will host the first of these annual events, with 10 more affiliates joining in as we enter our Centennial year.

“For years, Mental Health America has looked to launch a nationwide signature event to educate Americans on the importance of mental health,” David L. Shern, president and ceo of Mental Health America, said. “With our combined network of affiliates, we have a tremendous opportunity to reach a wide audience and achieve our educational goals.”

Jammin’ Away the Blues was developed by a Signature Event Working Group convened by Mental Health America’s National Office and 12 affiliates, with additional collaborators from within the Mental Health America network.

In addition to raising their profiles locally, affiliates joining in the program will share revenue from the sponsorships acquired by National, and will retain all proceeds from their inaugural event.

Feedback has been incredibly positive from both the Mental Health America family and The Blues Foundation.

“Jammin’ Away the Blues is such a natural in that the genesis of Blues music can be found in the desire to lift the spirits in the worst of times,” said Jay Sieleman, executive director of The Blues Foundation. “Since its beginning, Blues music has served to soothe the soul and continues to meet that need today.”

Headquartered in Memphis, the home of the Blues, The Blues Foundation mission is to preserve Blues history, celebrate Blues excellence, support Blues education, and ensure the future of this uniquely American art form.

“We have found a perfect partner in The Blues Foundation,” Dr. Shern said.
