ALEXANDRIA, Va. (June 14, 2012)—Mental Health America today applauded Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, for providing a combined increase of $40 million for the Community Mental Health Services Block Grant and the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant in the mark up of the FY 2013 Labor, HHS and Education Appropriations bill.
The increase recognizes the severe budget cuts taking place to public mental health and substance abuse treatment systems nationwide.
Mental Health America also commended the panel for including a $100 million increase for the National Institutes of Health.
“We deeply appreciate the Chairman's leadership in rejecting the administration's proposal to cut funding for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, including a sharp cut to the Children’s Mental Health Program,” said David Shern, Ph.D, president and CEO of Mental Health America.
“Preventing cuts to critical programs that assist consumers, promote the integration of behavioral health with general health and aid suicide prevention efforts reflects the Chairman's strong commitment to people with mental health and substance use conditions."
Mental Health America hopes that the House funding panel follows a similar approach and builds on the increases provided in the Senate bill.
