“It’s such a relief to know that I’m not the only one feeling this way and that you’ve seen this before,” wrote Sam in his letter to the Resource Center. “I was afraid that it was all in my head. I’ll look at the resources you’ve given me.  I feel like I can start the road to recovery. Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to help someone you've never met.”

Put yourself in Sam’s* place for a minute.

Sam, a member of the National Guard, was in New Orleans to help the victims affected by Hurricane Katrina. Upon his return home Sam experienced depression and anxiety. The lasting images of seeing people’s homes, families, and heritage destroyed by Katrina contributed to Sam’s inability to sleep and cope with all that he’d witnessed. Sam needed reassurance that he was not alone feeling the way he did, and that his reactions were normal.

What would you do?  Who would you turn to?

Mental Health America’s Resource Center is always there lending an ear and offering a helping hand in times of crisis. In Sam’s situation, the Resource Center helped him to make sense of his feelings.

Right now, we need your help.
