Invisible Children's Project: Information
In 1993, the Mental Health Association in Orange County, Inc., successfully led an effort to bring the needs of families in which a parent has a mental illness or co-occurring disorders to the forefront in New York state.
The Mental Health Association in Orange County developed the Invisible Children’s Project (ICP) to provide integrated essential services to parents with treatment needs to increase their ability to function in their communities and assist them in creating a safe and nurturing environment for their children.
Today, ICP is a nationally recognized, award-winning, program for parents with mental illness or co-occurring disorders and their minor children.
ICP offers services such as:
- 24-hour family case management and crisis services,
- referral and ongoing linkages to community resources,
- supported housing, and
- family preservation and reunification services.
In New York, ICP has decreased out-of-home placements for children, decreased hospitalizations for parents, helped families find stable housing, and enhanced family self-determination. ICP has resulted in vast savings, in both dollars and human potential.
