Advocacy Day: Legislator of the Year Awards and Capitol Hill Visits

Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) presented a Career Achievement Award to his best friend and fellow leader in the fight for mental health parity, Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-MN). We also honored Rep. Mike Michaud (D-Maine) with a Legislator of the Year Award for his work on behalf of veterans and their families.

Following the award presentations and a briefing from our government affairs staff, attendees visited their Members of Congress and urged them to make mental health a legislative priority in the year ahead.

Leading experts and Mental Health America president and CEO David Shern also briefed congressional staff on key issues and priorities and met with Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), the cosponsor of a House Resolution recognizing that prevention of mental illness among young people should be a public health priority.

Delegate Assembly and Mental Health America Awards

Members elected the national Board of Directors and honored affiliate and volunteers for their outstanding contributions to the mental health movement. Awards included the Betty Humphrey Cultural Competency Award, presented to the Mental Health Association in South Central Kansas; the Innovations in Programming Award presented to Becky Kay of Mental Health America of Greenville County; and the Sandy Brandt Volunteer Service Award presented to MHA in Greensboro’s Latino Mental Health Awareness Campaign.
